Local Landscape Designation (LLD) protects areas considered by the Local Planning Authority to be of particular landscape value to the local area. LLD is formally adopted through the planning system most conveniently via Local Plans.
Adoption of LLD is generally supported and encouraged by the National Planning Policy Framework (NPPF December 2024 revise; paragraphs 187 and 188). Subsequent inclusion of the detail in a Supplementary Planning Document (SPD), will ensure that sustaining this precious natural and heritage-rich environment is a primary consideration in any decision on environmental improvement work or development in the valley.
The landscape of the River Mimram and its valley are of great value to the area. LLD will:
- encourage positive landscape change;
- play an important role in developing an awareness of the landscape qualities that make this valley distinctive;
- promote awareness and pride in surroundings and among the various communities in the valley;
- lead to greater enjoyment of the area with benefits to wellness and the local economy;
- help to protect the landscape from inappropriate development.
