The valley has long been a popular location for residence.  Its popularity in the Georgian era (largely due to its proximity to London – 4-6 hours horse/carriage ride) led to the creation of numerous estates, grand houses and parklands.  To this day the area continues to be popular for daily commuting into London and to nearby centres such as Hitchin, Stevenage, Welwyn Garden City and Hertford.  Also within easy reach are St Albans, Watford, Hemel Hempsted, Luton and Harlow, amongst others.

The area is also popular for leisure, recreation and pleasure, both for local residents and visitors. There are numerous footpaths and bridlepaths, small shops in the village centres, a wealth of pubs, pub/restaurants and a full range of restaurants.

Modern authors have emphasised the rural nature of the area and contribution to well-being and the environment, notably:

Tony Rook (River Mimram, Amberley Publishing, 2014);

Tim Haygarth (Chalk Stream Reflections, Mindful Steps Publishing, 2023).
